Anwar gets musical!

I don’t know what got into me. One of those impulsive moments driven by a long-kept longing I guess. My sister forwarded an email from about an open audition for a very interesting musical, ‘Kaki Blue’. What attracted me the most was the line ‘ No Experience Required, Anyone Can Join’ something along that. So I contacted the person in-charge and booked me an audition session. Wow me. Wait that doesn’t sound very convincing. WOW ME!~

I stepped my foot into that creatively constructed building. I was a KLpac virgin. After spending maybe 2 days monologuing, belting out oldies, pop music and  wobbling (dancing le) to random musics, this would be a night to remember. There were 10+ people in my session, and I was the only male, oh yeah. Effeminated? Nah.

They lined up chairs in a straight line in front of the panels in a very beautiful studio. The ambiance was great. So after everyone has taken their place, the 1st round began.

1st round: Singing. I was the 3rd person. I sang ‘Smile’ by Nat King Cole. I started with quite a high key and a fast upbeat rhythm, my improv. One of the panels stopped me and told me to sing in a lower and slower rhythm. Then he told me to sing in a ‘jumpy’ beat, lol I don’t have the words for it. I call it jumpy because I sang like ‘Smile-though-your-heart-is-ach-ing, Smile-even-though-it’s-brea-king’ haha. I assumed they liked my voice because they were nodding.

2nd round: Monologue. Aight, I picked the V for Vendetta monologue, the scene where the main character, V introduces himself to the heroin, Evey. The dialogue with so many V words. ‘Voila! In view, a humble vaudevillian veteran, cast vicariously as both victim and villain by the vicissitudes of Fate….’ Again, one of the panels stopped me and called me over to him. ‘Can you read these lines, the ones in Malay?’ he asked. So I read with the intonation and all.

‘Ohhh this guy can speak Malay…’ they laughed. I took it as a good sign. I smiled and walked back to my chair.

3rd round: Dancing baby!

Ahhh this one is the funnest, a choreographer showed us some simple moves. They were quite easy. No problemo. Then there was the freestyle session, move in whatever way you want. BOOM! Napoleon Dynamite I became. Groovy!

Callbacks on Monday 27th April 2009 and guess what? I got in.

Same studio, different challenges. The boys and the girls were separated. All of us had to sing Leaving On A Jet Plane. The girl, my God, they sounded so beautiful together. As for the boys, well I would say we sounded ok albeit at a lower key. No solo session. Well, no solo solo. We were given a line to sing randomly from that song, he just point at one of us and you just continue to sing from where the person before you stopped. It was fun.

2nd round: Dancing…again, what do you expect, it’s for a musical. Boys and girls different moves. In my opinion the boys had to copy harder choreography with all the turning and the stomping and the shuffling.

Final result? Friday the 1st.

I’m not sure whether I’ll be selected or not. I’m quite happy with my voice not so much with my dancing so…yeah but whatever happens, it was definitely a refreshing experience. A momentary breakaway from the monotonous routine of my everyday life- machines, books, commuting, the internet. I met a lot of people from very interesting backgrounds who crave the same interest as I do and together I didn’t feel embarassed or shy. We just did what we love.
